Web 2.0 and Digital Citizenship

Co-workers,

I have assembled a variety of different resources to aide you in your efforts to integrate digital citizenship education into your everyday classroom instruction. Below, you will find links to various online resources which should be helpful to you. I have tried to organize them to be as helpful to you as possible. Please let me know if there is something I have missed or if there is some other way in which I can help you with digital citizenship!

1) InCtrl is a great website for teachers - it includes free standards-based lessons that teach key digital citizenship concepts. They have these lessons broken down by topic and subject. I've included links to the different subjects below. I can't say enough good things about InCtrl - I think you'll be really happy with this resource! (These lessons are designed for students in grades 4 through 8, perfect for our middle school students - but I think they could even be used for some of our upper grades, as well!)

InCtrl - English/Language Arts
InCtrl - Science
InCtrl - Math
InCtrl - Social Studies

2) NetSmartz.org is another great resource for teaching our students about internet safety and the importance of being a good digital citizen. This is another website that offers free lesson plans and activities for tired teachers! :) This is also a great website to tell parents about. If you have some time, the Real-Life Stories videos on this site can a valuable watch for both adults and students alike. These resources can be downloaded at multiple grade levels, so feel free to share with your elementary teacher friends, as well!

NetSmartz - direct link for Teacher Resources (you'll have to create a free NetSmartz account to download the lesson plans and activities) Notice that there are two drop down boxes for you to choose your student audience level and then the internet safety or digital citizenship area that you're wanting to discuss for that day's lesson.

3) CommonSense.org has a lot of tools for helping educators teach digital citizenship. Lessons are available in multiple formats, there are interactive games, videos, and assessments, family education materials, and lots more! It can be a little tricky to navigate, so I'll provide links to some of the best places to start. Again, this is a great website for K-12, so it can be used for all of our 7-12 high school students, and can be shared with our elementary friends if they're wanting to incorporate digital citizenship into their lessons.

Student Games and Interactives
Classroom Posters
Digital Citizen Curriculum/Lessons - be sure to choose 6-8 or 9-12 in the "Select Grade Band" column. Your first lesson should be "Digital Life 101" or "Digital Life 102" - please see me if you need help with this!

These are all great resources to help get you started on your digital citizenship journey with our students. Please let me know if there is any way that I can be of assistance to you!
